The Potus-eo template is a header template to use with United States presidential executive orders. Based on the number of the executive order, many of the standard header fields are automatically filled out.
Not all executive orders have a normal number, especially for older orders; there are several historical quirks. The numbering system has been in effect only since 1907, but many previous executive orders were given numbers (starting with a Lincoln executive order). After the initial ordering was set, further older orders were discovered, and given "in-between" numbers like 9-2, 27-1, 330-B, etc. Even after the numbering system started, some orders were missed even as they were being signed, resulting in official titles like Executive Order 669½. This template supports such orders by overriding a few additional parameters.
Many old executive orders did not receive an official number (these are termed the "unnumbered series". This template does not (yet) support those orders, but may in the future.
Usual Parameters
[edit]{{Potus-eo | eo = | title = | section = | year = | month = | day = | fr-vol = | fr-page = | fr-year = | fr-month = | fr-day = | notes = }}
Possible Parameters
[edit]{{Potus-eo | eo = | eo-potus = | title = | defaultsort= | author = | author-nolink = | section = | previous = | next = | signed = | year = | month = | day = | cite = | fr-vol = | fr-page = | fr-year = | fr-month = | fr-day = | notes = | nocat = }}
- This template automatically populates the Executive Order's citation URL once the [eo] number has been given; it should figure out the signing President for you too. If something errors out, try removing the entire field and refresh. Alternatively, visiting the automatically generated citation URL should give you most of the correct info to populate missing parameters.
Definitions
[edit]Parameter | Documentation |
---|---|
eo | Required, and must be a numeric value. This is the "number" of the executive order, for example "11030" for Executive Order 11030. Numeric comparisons are made on it, and several other fields are defaulted based on this value, so it will cause errors if not present or not numeric. Usually, providing this number alone will generate a citation link to a page on archives.gov which contains most of the rest of the other information to be filled in (date, Federal Register page and date, and title). If this is a "lettered" executive order, use the base number of the order, and override other fields based on this value (title, next, previous, and defaultsort) to override with correct values. |
eo-potus | Optional; this is the link to the specific president's executive order page. Normally it is automatically populated based on the number, and should not need to be overridden. |
title | Optional; defaults to "Executive Order <number>". Needs to be overridden for the "lettered" orders. |
defaultsort | By default, the potus-eo template assigns the DEFAULTSORT setting, allowing orders to be automatically sorted in their categories correctly. The value defaults to "Executive Order <padded_number>", where the number is padded to five digits, for example "Executive Order 09646". For "lettered" orders, this value needs to be overridden to ensure the base numeric value is padded to five digits, for example "Executive Order 07784-A". This value may change in the future to support unnumbered executive orders. |
author | Optional; can be used to override the author, which by default is President of the United States. Should not need to be used. |
section | Optional, but should almost always be set to the official title of the executive order. |
previous | Optional; by default this is set to the previous numeric executive order. Needs to be overridden for lettered orders, or if the previous order is a lettered order, with the name of the adjoining executive order. Should not be linked; that is done automatically. |
next | Optional; by default this is set to the next numeric executive order. Needs to be overridden for lettered orders, or if the next order is a lettered order, with the name of the adjoining executive order. Should not be linked; that is done automatically. |
signed | Optional; if set will override the default "signed" section in the header. Should not need to be overridden; by default it will show the correct president, and for orders since 1937, will automatically link to the order's entry on archives.gov. |
year | Technically optional, but should always be set. This is the year the executive order was signed. This value will also cause the order to be automatically categorized in the correct "Executive orders of <year>" category; without it the order will be placed into Category:Undated works. The value eventually may also be required to correctly sort executive orders. |
month | Optional, but should be set. This is the numeric month of year the executive order was signed. The value eventually may also be required to correctly sort executive orders. |
day | Optional, but should be set. This is the day of month the executive order was signed. The value eventually may also be required to correctly sort executive orders. |
cite | If set, will override the citation area on the right side. By default, will cite the Federal Register volume and page (if provided) where the executive order was printed. Can be overridden if there are additional citations of original sources, or if there are sources for orders which predated the Federal Register (which is where all orders since early 1936 have been officially printed). |
fr-vol | Optional; the volume of the Federal Register the order was printed in. This information can usually be found by following the "signed" link after the "eo" parameter has been filled in. This, and all the other "fr-" parameters, are used with the {{USFR}} template to generate the default citation. If not supplied, no citation will be generated. |
fr-page | The page in the Federal Register volume the order was printed in. This information can usually be found by following the "signed" link after the "eo" parameter has been filled in. |
fr-year | Optional. The year the order was printed in the Federal Register, which is usually a few days after the order was signed and can therefore be in a different year. This information can usually be found by following the "signed" link after the "eo" parameter has been filled in. |
fr-month | The numeric month of year the order was printed in the Federal Register. This information can usually be found by following the "signed" link after the "eo" parameter has been filled in. |
fr-day | The day of month the order was printed in the Federal Register. This information can usually be found by following the "signed" link after the "eo" parameter has been filled in. |
notes | Required. Will add a section of notes, just like the same parameter in the {{Header}} template. If none, the parameter should still be present but with no value supplied. |
nocat | Normally, executive orders will be automatically placed into categories for the year and the associated president. If a value is passed for this parameter, usually "true", then this automatic categorization will be avoided. Usually used for examples. See w:WP:CATSUP. |
Usage
[edit]Example One
[edit]- Basic example, with just the eo, section, and year supplied; this allows automatic population of the president, and signing citation and URL on the left hand side of citation bar. Year, Month & Day preferred for proper layout.
- Presence of ( cite = ) to turn off the normal Federal Register page and date citation that normally appears on the right hand side of citation bar.
{{Potus-eo | eo = 7620 | section = Ordering Easier Templates for Mankind | year = 1937 | month = | day = | notes = }}

Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum.
Example Two
[edit]- Typical example of a "lettered" executive order. The title, previous, next, and defaultsort parameters need to be overridden.
{{Potus-eo | eo = 7784 | title = Executive Order 7784-A | previous = Executive Order 7784 | next = Executive Order 7785 | defaultsort = Executive Order 07784-A | section = Designating Architect of the Capitol as... the Alley Dwelling Authority | year = 1938 | month = 1 | day = 5 | fr-vol = 3 | fr-page = 63 | fr-year = 1938 | fr-month = 1 | fr-day = 12 | notes = }}
- OUTPUT:

Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum.
Example Three
[edit]- Uses the {eo-potus = } field; this overides the auto president population in signing citation.
- Ficticious Month, Day and Year for illustration of signing citation output.
- added coments to note= field for illustrative purposes as well.
{{Potus-eo | eo = 12620 | eo-potus = Sarah Bachmann | title = Executive Order 12620 | section = Renewing the Order Calling for Easier Templates for Mankind | year = 2045 | month = 2 | day = 14 | fr-vol = 105 | fr-page = 2733 | fr-year = 2045 | fr-month = 2 | fr-day = 17 | notes = Amended [[Executive Order 13502]]; Revoked [[Executive Order 13202]] }}
