Template:Verse/doc

From Wikisource

Template for creating an anchor for verses:

  • chapter (or parameter 1), the chapter the verse belongs to
  • verse (or parameter 2), the verse being linked to
  • color (or colour, or parameter 3), over-ride the green colour of the verses
  • notext, define as blank to over-ride the display of the verse number
  • align, use to control positioning

Positioning

[edit]

When the "align" parameter is unset, the verse number appears inline:

{{verse||1|}} Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

1 Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

align

[edit]

When the align=left, the verse number is set to the margin:

{{verse||1|align=left}} Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

1 Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

This is useful when use in poems, as it can be floated out of the way of the poem's structure, and doesn't affect the start of the line. You probably need to use a div class such as "indented-page" (designed for this case) or even "prose" to keep the text's left margin away from the verse number:

<div class=indented-page><poem>
{{verse||1|align=left}} To see a world in a grain of sand,
{{verse||2|align=left}} And heaven in a wild flower;
{{verse||3|align=left}} To hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
{{verse||4|align=left}} And eternity in an hour.
</poem></div>

1 To see a world in a grain of sand,
2 And heaven in a wild flower;
3 To hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
4 And eternity in an hour.

When the align=float, the verse number is left floated to the margin:

{{verse||2|align=float}} She weepeth sore in the night,

2 She weepeth sore in the night,

This option is useful in poems where the verse number needs to be closer to the text, because other items appear in the margin, or where the verse number would otherwise overlap the text:

:{{overfloat left|align=right|padding=1em|{{hebrew|ב}}}}{{verse|1|2|align=float}}She weepeth sore in the night,
:And her tears are on her cheeks;
:She hath none to comfort her
:Among all her lovers;
ב2She weepeth sore in the night,
And her tears are on her cheeks;
She hath none to comfort her
Among all her lovers;
