Another option would be to use {{sp|"}}':

She picked up the book and flipped through the contents, noticing something she liked. "'Nightfall' is my favorite short story," she said.

This results in .15em of space, which makes it slightly easier to see that the double quote is adjacent to the following single quote rather than to the preceding period. Actually I find the most natural-looking effect is achieved with {{" '}}:

That method is harder to explain or to remember, and can run into problems when combined with bold or italics. --EncycloPetey (talk) 01:51, 21 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
