AULICK, John H., naval officer, was born at Winchester, Va., in 1789, and joined the United States navy as midshipman in 1809. He was assigned to service on the Enterprise, and in 1812 he was present at the capture of the British privateers Mars and Fly. and the ship Boxer. He was subsequently in service on the Saranac, the Brandywine, the Constitution, and other well-known vessels, and in 1843 was appointed commander of the navy yard in Washington, holding the position for three years. In 1847 he was placed in command of the Vincennes, and later of the East India squadron. He was retired in 1861, and in the following year was placed on the retired list with the rank of commodore. He died April 27, 1873.
