DHESE men who do not die, but send to death,These iron men whom mercy cannot bendBeyond the lettered law; what when their breathShall suddenly and naturally end? What shall their final retribution be,What bloody silver then shall pay the tollsExacted for this legal infamyWhen death indicts their stark immortal souls?
The day a slumbering but awful God,Before Time to Eternity is blown,Examines with the same unyielding rodThese images of His with hearts of stone,These men who do not die, but death decree,—These are the men I should not care to be.
