"The Braes of Balquhither" was published in Robert Archibald Smith's collection Scotish Minstrel (1821–24), with a musical arrangement by Smith. It may have been based on the traditional Scottish song "The Braes o' Bowhether".
The popular variant known as "Wild Mountain Thyme" was written by Irish musician Francis McPeake and recorded (with a new musical setting) in 1957. McPeake's version is still under copyright and therefore cannot be hosted on Wikisource.
