Hahnen, Des Moines Shoe Pioneer, Dies
Henry Hahnen, pioneer Des Moines shoeman, died of typhoid pneumonia at his home, 1070 Seventh street, at 4 o'clock this morning after an illness of three weeks. Mr. Hahnen was well known to many of the old settlers of this city. He was born October 27, 1841 in Wurtemburg, Germany, and at 12 years of age came to the United States in a sailing vessel. He located in Lafayette, Indiana and then came to Des Moines, where he learned the boot and shoe business, which he had always followed. In 1866 he married Miss Sophia Becker. Until his recent illness, Mr. Hahnen occupied a prominent place in St. John's Lutheran church. The deceased is survived by his wife and ten children, Mrs. Rose Davis, Mrs. Anna Wirt, Ed Hahnen, Mrs. Carl Niendorf, Miss Minnie Hahnen, Mrs. D. D. Ransberg of Minneapolis, Mrs. C. E. Englebeck of Milwaukee and Will Hahnen of Joplin, Missouri. There are also twelve grandchildren.
