BECK, Karl, Austrian poet: b. Baja, Hungary, 1 May 1817; d. Vienna, 10 April 1879. His poems reflect the passionate temperament of his Hungarian countrymen in sonorous verses of consummate finish. Among his works are ‘Nights’ (1838); ‘The Poet Arrant’ (1838); ‘Jankó’ (1842), a romance in verse; ‘Songs of the Poor Man’ (1847); ‘Jadwiga’ (1863), a tale in verse; ‘Mater Dolorosa’ (1854), a novel.
