BERGK, Theodor, German classical philologist: b. Leipzig, 22 May 1812; d. Ragaz, Switzerland, 20 July 1881. He became an indisputable authority on Hellenic poetry, producing two works of surpassing importance in that department of scholarship: ‘Greek Lyric Poets’ (4th ed., 1878-82), and ‘History of Greek Literature’ (1872); the latter brought to completion with the aid of his posthumous papers.
