BERGMANN, Karl, American musician: b. Ebersbach, Saxony, 1821; d. New York, 10 Aug. 1876. He studied at Zittau and Breslau. Participation in the revolutionary outbreaks of 1848 obliged him to go into exile and he came to New York. He organized and conducted the first great German music festival, held in the Winter Garden Theatre (1855); in 1856 introduced German opera at Niblo's Garden, and for several years pnor to his death conducted the concerts of the Philharmonic Society. He composed several orchestral pieces, and excelled it a player of the violoncello and the piano. He contributed greatly to the advancement of good music in America.
