The Encyclopedia Americana (1920)/Blacklegs

BLACKLEGS, a name commonly applied in England to cheating gamblers; during the labor agitation in 1889 and 1890 the name was given to non-unionist workmen by the members of trade unions. In this latter sense the word is now exclusively used, and corresponds with the American epithet “scabs.”
