BLACKWELL, Emily, American physician: b. Bristol, England, 1826; d. London, 8 Sept. 1910. Following the example of her sister Elizabeth, after being refused admission to medical study at 11 different schools, including Geneva Medical School which had admitted her sister, she entered the Bellevue free hospital in New York city and later was received by the Western Reserve University where she completed her course. She studied in Edinburgh and in Paris with her sister, and was associated with her through all her professional career.
