Thomas, Marmontel, Benoist and other masters, and took first prize for piano playing at the age of 13. In 1888 he was appointed professor of piano at the Conservatory in succession to Marmontel. At the Exposition of 1889 he gave a series of historical piano recitals, the great success of which induced him to devote himself to the older piano music.
