FAULKNER, fâk'nėr, Charles James, American lawyer: b. Berkeley County, Va., 1805; d. 1 Nov. 1884. He was admitted to the bar in 1829, sat at various times in both houses of the Virginia legislature and was a member of Congress 1851-59. In 1860 he was appointed Minister to France. Returning to the United States in 1861 he was imprisoned on suspicion of disloyalty, in Fort Warren, Boston, but was exchanged the same year. He was sent to Congress from West Virginia 1875-77.
