HEDGE-SPARROW, a small brown warbler (Accentor modularis), with a sweet plaintive song, very common in Europe about gardens and roadsides in summer. It is not a sparrow at all, but nearly related to the American water-thrushes (Seiurus). In Great Britain it goes by many names, as dunnock, etc., and is one of the birds most frequently mentioned in books.
