JACOBY, Harold, American astronomer: b. New York, 4 March 1865. On his graduation from Columbia University in 1885, he applied himself to astronomical research, and was appointed assistant astronomer United States eclipse expedition to West Africa (1889-90). He became professor of astronomy at Columbia in 1894 and an active member of the leading astronomical and scientific societies at home and abroad. His writings include numerous technical monographs in astronomical photography, stellar parallax and star clusters which have been published by French, English and Russian societies, frequent contributions to the periodical press on popular astronomy, and standard textbooks ‘Practical Talks by an Astronomer’ (1891); ‘Astronomy, a popular handbook’ (1913); ‘Navigation’ (1917).
