KALEVIPOEG, kạ-lā'vē-pĕg (son of Kalev), the chief Esthonian epic poem, based upon popular songs collected by Kreutzwald (1857-59). As the material used by the collector was destroyed, much discussion has resulted as to the position occupied by the poem among real national epics. Consult Kirby, ‘Hero of Esthonia and Other Studies’ (Vol. I. London 1895); Reinthal, ‘Kalewipoeg, eine estniche Sage’ (including the text of the poem with a German translation, Dorpal 1857-61).
