KOBÉ, kō bĕ, Japan, a treaty port and former municipality of the main island Hondo, on the west short of the Gulf of Osaka, adjoining on the northeast the prefectural city of Hiogo, with which it was united in 1892. It is the most important of the treaty ports with the largest trade and shipping, a fine harbor, docks, wharves for ocean steamers, ship-building yards, railway shops and other important industrial establishments. Kobé is well laid out with wide streets, electrically lighted. Pop. 442,167.
