LOEB, James, American banker and Hellenist: b. New York, N. Y., 6 Aug. 1867. He was graduated at Harvard University in 1888 and from that year until 1901 was a member of the banking firm of Kuhn, Loeb and Company, New York. He is a member of the English Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies; in 1911 he turned over his collection of Aretine pottery to the Fogg Museum at Harvard, and in the same year perfected plans for the publication of a library of Greek and Latin authors — text and translation. The volumes, known as the Loeb Classical Library, began to appear in 1912 and were continued in the following years. Mr. Loeb has published translations of Paul Delcharme's ‘Euripides and the Spirit of His Dreams,’ and of Maurice Croiset's ‘Aristophanes and the Political Parties at Athens.’
