LORD, John King, American educator: b. Cincinnati, Ohio, 21 Oct. 1848. He was graduated at Dartmouth College in 1868. In 1869 he was made a tutor in Latin in Dartmouth; professor of Latin and rhetoric, 1872-80; professor of oratory and belles-lettres, 1880-82; associate professor, 1882-92, and after 1892 professor of the Latin language and literature. He was acting president of Dartmouth College, 1892-93; and acting president of the faculty in the absence of the president, 1893-1900. He has edited many Latin textbooks and Chase's ‘History of Dartmouth College’ (Vol. I, 1891), is the author of an ‘Atlas of the Geography and History of the Ancient World’ (1902), and has translated Hertzburg's ‘Geschichte der Römer in Alterthum’ (1902); ‘History of Dartmouth College, 1815-1909’ (1913).
