MITSUKURI, mĭt'sů-ků'rĭ, Kakachi, Japanese zoologist: b. Edo, Japan, 1857; d. 1909. He came to the United States in 1873, received his Ph.D. from Yale in 1879 and Johns Hopkins in 1883; and, returning to Japan, became professor in College of Science, University of Tokio, in 1882. In 1893 he was made councillor of this university and in 1901 dean of the College of Science. In 1896 he was placed at the head of the fur-seal commission and signed a treaty with the United States and Great Britain. In recognition of his public service the Order of the Sacred Treasure was given to him in 1907. He was one of the leading zoologists of Japan and published a very important series of papers on the embryology of turtles (1886-96).
