NIECKS, nēks, Frederick, Anglo-German composer and critic: b. Düsseldorf, Germany, 3 Feb. 1845. He was educated at Leipzig University and was a violinist and music teacher in his native city till 1868 when he settled in Scotland, where he was for some years engaged in teaching music, and since 1875 he has written much for musical journals. From 1891 to 1914 he was Reid professor of music at the University of Edinburgh. He has published ‘A Concise Dictionary of Musical Terms’ (1884); ‘Chopin as a Man and Musician’ (1888); and ‘Programme Music in the Last Four Centuries’ (1908).
