NINDEMANN, Wilhelm Friedrich Carl, German-American Arctic explorer: b. Gingst, Germany, 22 April 1850. He removed to the United States in 1867 and in 1872 accompanied the Polaris expedition. When the Polaris was caught in the ice he with 18 of the crew drifted on an ice-floe for seven months. They were rescued by the Tigress in 1873. He joined the Jeanette expedition in 1879, and when the vessel was crushed in the ice he was despatched for aid in 1881 by Captain De Long. He assisted in the search for De Long and his companions, whose bodies were discovered the next year. He served in the Spanish-American War. He published ‘Eines deutschen Matrosen Nordpolfahrten’ (1885).
