NINIGRET, an American Indian sachem of the Niantics, one of the Algonquin tribes. In 1637 he assisted the colonists in the Pequot war; and in 1647 began a war against the Mohegan, which was concluded by a peace at Boston. In 1667 he sold much of his land on Long Island to the colonists. He refused to allow Christianity to be preached to his people, saying “Go make the English good first.” He died in 1677.
