PHILLIPS, William, American educational benefactor, son of William Phillips (1722-1804): b. Boston. Mass., 10 April 1750; d. there, 26 May 1827. He engaged in business with his father, became wealthy and was 12 times chosen lieutenant-governor of Massachusetts (1812-23). At his death he bequeathed large sums to Phillips (Andover) Academy and to Andover Theological Seminary.
