REBER, rā'bĕr, Franz von, German art-historian: b. Cham, Bavaria, 10 Nov. 1834. He studied in Munich, Berlin and Rome, became a lecturer at the University of Munich in 1858, was appointed professor at the Polytechnicum there in 1863 and in 1869 occupied the chair of history of art in that institution. In 1873 he became director of the Royal Gallery. He has translated Vitruvius' ‘Architecture’ (1865) and Rooses' ‘History of the Antwerp School of Painting’ (1880), and has written ‘Geschichte der Baukunst im Altertum’ (1864-67); ‘Kunstgeschichte des Mittelalters’ (1886); ‘Geschichte der Malerei vom Anfang des 14. bis zum Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts’ (1894); ‘Die phrygischen Felsendenkmäler’ (1897), etc.
