ROOSEVELT, Robert Barnwell, American author and politician: b. New York, 7 Aug 1829; d. Sayville, L. I., 14 June 1906. He was admitted to the bar and practised law in New York until 1871, when he was elected to Congress. In 1888 he was appointed Minister to the Netherlands and served two years. He was active in opposing the Tweed ring, and wrote several works of natural history. His most important public service, however, was in the establishment of the United States Fish Commission, of which measure he was the originator and promoter while in Congress.
