SCHLESINGER, slĕs'ĭn-jėr, Frank, American astronomer: b. New York, 11 May 1871. He was graduated at the College of the City of New York in 1890 and took his Ph.D. at Columbia in 1898. He was an observer in charge of the International Latitude Observatory, Ukiah, Cal., in 1898, and in 1899-1903 he was astronomer at Yerkes Observatory. Since 1903 he has been the head of the Allegheny Observatory at the University of Pittsburgh. He is author of numerous papers on variations of latitude, spectroscopic binaries, stellar parallaxes and the reduction of astronomical photographic plates.
