SCHLICH, shlĭk, Sir William, English forester: b. Darmstadt, 1840. He was educated at Darmstadt and the University of Giessen and was appointed in 1866 to the Indian forest department. He held the offices of conservator of forests, 1871, and inspector-general of forests, 1881; and organized the first school of forestry in England, at Cooper's Hill, in 1885. He was made F.R.S. in 1901 and knighted in 1909. He is the author of ‘A Manual of Forestry’ (5 vols., 1889-96); ‘The Outlook of the World's Timber Supply’; ‘Afforestation in Great Britain and Ireland’; ‘Forestry in the United Kingdom.’
