The Green Carnation

From Wikisource
The Green Carnation (1894)
by Robert Smythe Hichens

Written as a satire based on the alleged relationship between English authors Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas, this fictional work was used as evidence in the Regina v Wilde court trial on charges of gross indecency. Its title is taken from an alleged 19th century code for secretly gay men which was a green flower pinned onto a suit or shirt to identify each other.
