Prof. Baden-Powell, of Oxford and Langton Manor; unmarried; Educ., Charterhouse; Joined 13th Hussars, 1876: served with that regiment as Adjutant in India, Afghanistan, and South Africa; served on the Staff as Assist. Mil. Secy., South Africa, 1887-89; operations in Zululand, 1888 (despatches): Assist. Mil. Secy., Malta. 1890-93: special service, Ashanti, in command of Native Levies, 1895 (star, brevet Lieut-Col.); Chief Staff Officer, in Matabeleland campaign, 1896-97 (despatches, brevet Col.); colonel of Irregular Horse, South Africa; promoted from 13th Hussars to Command of 5th Dragoon Guard, 1897: Lieut-Col. commanding 5th Dragoon Guards, 1897-99; Defence of Mafeking, 1899-1900 (promoted Maj.-Gen.; despatches); operations in Transvaal, 1900-01 (despatches, C.B.); organised S. African Constabulary: Inspector-General of S. African Constabulary, 1900-3; Inspector-General of Cavalry, 1903-7; Lieut.-Gen. commanding Northumbrian Territorial Division, 1908; founded the organization of Boy Scouts to promote good citizenship in the rising generation, 1908.
