Private School and Edinburgh Academy Ensign H.E.I.C.S. 1857; attached 54th Regt. 1857-58, Punjab Frontier Force, 1858-69; Assistant Political Agent and Superintendent Bhahawalpur 18[7]6-79; Commissariat Department; 1879-81; 31st Punjab Infry., 1881-82; Commissariat and Transport Department, 1882-87; commanded 38th Bengal Infry., 1887-89; served in Indian Mutiny (despatches, dangerously wounded, medal).
