Carpenter, Alfred, D.S.O. (1887) s. of Charles Carpenter, R.N.; b. 1847; educ, at Brighton College; entered the Royal Navy, 1861; retired as Captain, 1895; served in the “Challenger” scientific expedition; Soudan Expedition, 1884; was in charge of the Marine Survey of India, and piloted the war flotilla under fire to Mandalay and Bhamo, 1885; Recreations: Billiards, golf; Collection of corals, metreology and astronomy.
