Donnan, James, C.M.G. (1902); Inspector of Pearl Banks, Ceylon, (Retd.); b. Belfast, 1837; e.s. of James Donnan, merchant, formerly of Belfast: m. 1858, Rebecca Gillespie, d. of Wm. Skinner, of East India Company’s Service, 1858; apprentice in the Mercantile Marine service; commanded the Ceylon Government steamers “Manchester” and “Pearl” 1859-68; promoted to be Master Attendant, Colombo; Joint Police Magistrate, Colombo; and Inspector of Pearl Banks; retired, 1902; decorated for long and valuable services in connection with Colombo harbour and the pearl fisheries.
