Fleet, John Faithful, C.I.E. (1884), Ph.,D., late I.C.S.; s. of John George Fleet; b. 1847; educ: Merchant Taylor’s School, and University College, London; joined I.C.S., 1867; served in various capacities including that of Epigraphist to Government of India till 1883; Senior Collector, Magistrate, and Political Agent, Sholapur, 1886-1889; Ag. Commissioner, 1891; Commissioner of Customs, Bombay, 1893; Commissioner, Southern Division, Bombay, 1894-97; retired, 1897. Publications: Inscriptions of the Early Gupta Kings; contributions to Vol. III. Corpus Inscriptionum Indicarum; Dynasties of the Kanavese Districts; Indian Epigraphy (Imperial Gazetteer of India, new Edition); numerous contribuitions on ancient history and antiquities of India in the Indian Antiquary, the Epigraphica Indica, the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, Archælogical Reports of W.
