Mary Eliza, widow of W. L. Francis; British Commissioner to International Opium Commission, Shanghai, 1909; Chairman, Whiteaway, Laidlaw & Co., Ltd., M.P. (L) for the Eastern division of Renfrewshire, 1906-10; made a gift of Rs. 75,000 to the authorities of the Y.M.C.A., Calcutta, to be utilised for the construction of the buildings of the association one at Wellington and the other at the Bow Bazaar Street, Calcutta, 1913; made a gift of £50,000 towards a scheme of European education in India, 1913; also made liberal gifts to many a religious and educational institution at Calcutta.
