Mittra, S. M., M.R.A.S., Journalist; b. 1856; belongs to the same family as that of the late Raja Digambar Mittra of Calcutta; has been a journalist for over 1O years; is a writer in Bengali, Urdu, and English; was Proprietor and Editor of the Deccan Post; was selected by Sahitya Parishad, Calcutta, to revive the transliteration of Arabic, and Persian words and phrases in vogue in Bengali language; opposed anti-partition and boycott movements; has been a frequent contributor to the “Nineteenth Century”, the “Fortnightly”, the “Asiatic Quarterly Review”, and the Pall Mall Gazette; corresponded with the Right Hon’ble Mr. J. Chamberlain on the subject of “India and the Fiscal Question”; represented India at the International Free Trade Congress, London, 1908.
