Owen, Sydney James, M.A.; Reader in Indian History, Oxford University; b. 1827; educ: Repton School and Worcester College, Oxford; called to Bar (Lincoln’s Inn), 1871; came out to India as Professor of History, Elphinstone College, Bombay, 1856-60; Tutor in Law and Modern History, Magdalen College, Oxford, 1863-80; Examiner in the Law and History School, the Honour School of Modern History, and the Oriental School. Oxford; Reader in Indian Law at Oxford, 1864. Publications: Occasional Notes on Indian Subjects (privately printed); The Mussulman, The Maratha and the European (two lectures); India on the Eve of the British Conquest; Lecture on Anglo Indian Rule Historically considered; A selection from the Despatches, Treaties, and other papers of the Marquess Wellesley, K.G., during his Government of India; a selection from the despatches and memoranda relating to India, of the Duke of Wellington.
