Palanpur, Diwan of; H.H. Nawab Sir Sher Muhammad Khan Zorawur Khan, G.C.I.E. (1898); b. 1852; succeeded to gaddi, 1877; claims descent from the Lohanis, better known as the Jhaloris; the British connection with the State began in 1809; the administration of the State remained under the control of a Political Superintendent till 1874; area, 1766 sq. miles; population, 200,000; revenue, 7 lakhs; interested in agricultural development, and education; brought a vast area of arable land under cultivation and by way of encouraging cultivators, made them advances at low rates of interest; dug a large number of wells; has two sons and the heir apparent, Taley Muhammad Khan, was born in 1885; A.D.C., to the Governor of Bombay; maintains a force of 161 horse, and 440 foot; entitled to a salute of 13 guns; pays a tribute of Rs. 38,460 to Gaekwar of Baroda.
