Pentland, The Right Hon’ble Baron of Lyth, U.K. (1909), G.C.I.E., P.C. (1905) Governor of Madras; 3rd s. of Sir John Sinclair, 6th Baronet of Dunbeath; b. 1860; educ: at Edinburgh Academy, Wellington College, and at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Honorary LL.D., Aberdeen, 1906; Glasgow, 1907; St. Andrew’s, 1911; formerly Captain, 5th Lancers; served with Soudan Expedition, and won medal with clasps, 1885; Assistant Private Secretary to the Secretarv of State for War (Right Hon’ble H. Campbell Bannermann), 1892-95; Secretary to the Governor-General of Canada, 1896-97; Secretary for Scotland and sometimes Keeper of Government Seal of the Principality of Scotland, 1905; Vice-President of the Committee of Council of Education in Scotland; unsuccessfully contested for Aier District, 1886; represented Dumbartonshire, 1892-93, when he was defeated; and for Perforshire, 1837-1909; m. Lady Marjorie Adilne Garden, d. of 7th Earl of Aberdeen; again Secretary for Scotland; Governor of Madras, 1912; assumed charge of office, 30th Oct. 1912. Address; Government House, Madras, India.
