Ramalinga Reddy, C., M.A., Professor of History and Economics, Maharaja’s College, Mysore; s. of Mr. C. Subramania Reddy; adopted by his uncle Mr. Ramaswami Reddy; b. at Kattamanchi, a village in the district of Chittoor, 1880; educ: Board High School, Chittoor, and the Christian College, Madras; passed B.A. in the 1st class (History Branch), 1901; passed B.A., in the 1st class (Philosophy Branch), 1902; won medals for Political Economy and Philosophy; proceeded to England and joined the St. John’s College, Cambridge, on a scholarship of £200 per annum from the Government of India; was exhibitioner of St. John’s College and was awarded Wright’s prize, 1903; was elected scholar of St. John’s College and again awarded Wright’s Prize, Part I. 1904; 1st Class in the Historical Tripos, 1904-6; studied advanced Philosophy, but could not go up for examination owing to ill-health; took part in Union debates and was Secretary and Vice-President, Cambridge Union Society, being the only Indian as yet chosen to occupy these high offices; defeated at the Presidency, 1905; co-operated with Mr. Lala Lajpatrai and the late Mr. Gokhale in the Congress Camp in England; took part in the General Election of 1906; addressed meetings in various parts of England; was introduced by Mr. Gokhale to H.H. the Gaekwar of Baroda; proceeded to America to study the American questions at the instance of H.H. the Gaekwar, 1907; returned to India and joined the Baroda service as Vice-Principal of the College which he soon resigned; joined service in the Educational Department, Mysore, as Assistant to the Inspector-General of Education, 1909: Professor, Maharaja’s College, Mysore; accampanied H.H. the Yuvaraj of Mysore in his tour in Europe; returned and was deputed to study educational, etc. matters in foreign countries, and visited Canada, Japan, Phillipines, Hongkong. etc: returned to Mysore and was put on special duty to prepare a report of his observations and to formulate a scheme for a University for Mysore; rejoined the Maharaja’s College, Mysore, 1913.
