Raman, Chendrasekhara Venkata, M.A., University Lecturer, Calcutta; s. of Mr. R. Chendrasekhara; b. Trichinopolv, 1888; educ: Mrs.A.V.N. College, Vizagapatam, and the Presidency College, Madras; passed B.A. in 1st class and won the Arni Gold Medal for Physics, 1904; won the Arbuthnot and Elliot prizes for English composition; Vizianagaram prize for Physics; passed M.A., with Physics in the 1st class, 1907; the 1st Indian to pass M.A. with Physics, in the history of the Madras University; nominated by the Madras Government for the Indian Finance Department, 1907; stood 1st in the All-India Competitive Examination: joined service in the Financial department, Calcutta. 1907; transferred to Rangoon, 1909: received the Curzon Prize for research work in Physics, 1913; Secretary and then Director of Astronomical Society, India, 1913; Professor of Physics, Calcutta University, 1914; Sir Subramania Aiyer Lecturer for the Madras University, 1915; Vice-President, Indian Science Congress held at Madras, 1915; Associated Member, American Physical Society. 1915; m. Sowbhagyavati Logasundram, d. of Mr. S. Krishnaswami Aiyer, late of Madura.
