Smith, Hastings Betrand Lees, M.A., M.P., (L) Northampton since 1910; 2nd s. of late Major H. Lees Smith: b. in India, 1878; educ; Aldenham School and Queen’s College, Oxford; entered the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich; resigned his Cadetship and joined the Ruskin College, Oxford, 1899; General Secretary of the College, till 1902; Vice-Principal, 1902-07; was also Chairman of the Executive Committee of the College; Chairman of Public Administration, Bristol, 1907; visited India at the instance of the Government of Bombay to advise it on the teaching of economics and commerce, 1908. Publications; Studies in Indian Economics; India and the Tariff Problem; Trade Unionism for Christian Social Union. Recreations: Golf. Address; 35, Talbot Road, High Gate, N. Club: Reform.
