Smyth, Lt.-Col John, M.D., I.M.S., P.M.O., Burma (Retd.); at one time Senior Surgeon and Sanitary Commissioner, Mysore; b. Monaghan, Ireland, 1857; educ: Queen’s College, Belfast and Galway, and the University College, London; also Pasteur Institute, Paris; joined service at Netley, 1881; joined the General Hospital, Madras, 1882; on Military duty for voyage with troops between Madras and Rangoon; proceeded with the troops to Suez and returned to Bombay; again proceeded with troops to Seccunderabad, 1882; Resident Surgeon, Madras General Hospital, and Professor of Pathology; Madras Medical College, 1883; Fort Surgeon and Medical Inspector of Seamen at Madras and Professor of Anatomy, Madras Medical College, 1884; on Field service in Egypt with F. Com pany, Queen’s Own Sappers and Miners, (medal with two clasps and the Khedival Star) 1885; returned to Madras and posted as Assistant Physician, General Hospital, and Professor of Hygiene, Medical College, transferred to Vizagapatam; 1886; reverted to Madras, 1887; Superintendent, Government Lying-in Hospital.and Professor of Midwifery, 1892; became Surgeon-Major, 1893; services lent to Mysore Government; Medical Officer in charge of H.H. the Maharaja and the Palace, 1899; Senior Surgeon and Sanitary Commissioner and Inspector-General of Prisons, Mysore, 1904: deputed to study Applied Sanitation in Japan, 1908; re-joined his duties, June 1908; P.M.O., Burma, 1911; Retd. 1913.
