Stein, Sir Mark Aurel, K.C.I.E. (1912), Ph.D., D.Litt., D.Sc, C.I.E., (1910), Superintendent, Indian Archaeological department, s. of late Mr. Nichola Stein; b. Budapest, 1862; educ: Budapest and Dresden; studied Oriental languages and antiquities at Vienna and in England; came to India as Principal, Oriental College, Lahore; Registrar, Punjab University, 1888-89; made Antiquarian researches in Kashmir and on Afghan Frontier; Principal, Government Madrassa, Calcutta, 1899; carried out Archaeological explorations for Indian Government in Chinese Turkistan, 1900-01; Inspector-General of Education, N.W. Province and Beluchistan, 1906-08; carried out Archaeological and Geographical explorations in Central Asia and West China; transferred to the Archaeological department, 1909. Publications; Chronicle of the Kings of Kashmir, (3 vols.); Sand-buried Ruins of Khotan; Ancient Khotan, (2 vols.); Ruins of Desert Cathay (2 vols.); many papers on Sanskrit Literature, Indian Archaeology and Geography.
