The King of the Dark Chamber

From Wikisource
The King of the Dark Chamber (1916)
by Rabindranath Tagore, translated by Kshitish Chandra Sen

This work is the first problem play in Bengali literature. It was also the first of Tagore's plays in the allegorical-symbolical genre. Tagore chose this form in order to portray what he himself described as the inner conflict of the soul. The story is adapted from a Buddhist Jataka Tale. See here for a detailed analysis.
The work was first published in Bengali in 1910; translated by K. C. Sen, revised by Tagore and published in English in 1914. Translation was wrongly attributed to Tagore on the title page of the work, which was corrected later by the publishers (see here). For details about how the translation evolved in stages, see here.
