A group of about 40 islands, constituting a part of the Bismarck Archipelago (q.v.), lying to the northeast of New Guinea, between 2° and 3° S. lat. and 146° 18′ and 147° 46′ E. long. (Map: East India Islands, L 5). The largest is about 50 miles long from east to west, and is covered with rich vegetation. They abound in cocoanut trees and are inhabited by savages.
