BRANDT, Hermann Carl George (1850— ). A German-American scholar, born at Vilsen, Germany. He graduated in 1872 at Hamilton College, was an instructor there in 1874-76, and from 1876 to 1882 was associate professor of German at the Johns Hopkins University. In 1883 he was appointed professor of German language and literature at Hamilton. His publications include a German-English and English-German dictionary; an edition (1879) of the Nathan der Weise of Lessing; a German Grammar (1884; several subsequent editions); and a useful German Reader (1889).
