CHENEY, Seth Wells (1810-50). An American artist. He was born in Connecticut, studied art in Paris, and became famous for his crayon portraits, those of Theodore Parker and William Cullen Bryant being especially well known. To him is attributed the beginning of crayon work in the United States. His widow, Ednah Dow Cheney (1824— ), became a well-known author. She took an active part in the Freedman's Aid movement, and was later a prominent advocate of woman suffrage.
