COLGATE, James Boorman (1818—). An American financier. He was born in New York City, and received his first commercial training in the house of Boorman, Johnston & Co. He later established the banking house of Trevor & Colgate, afterwards known as J. B. Colgate & Co. His extensive loans to the Government and sound financial policy during the financial crisis of 1873 contributed materially to the reestablishment of confidence both in the United States and in the markets of Europe. He was one of the founders of the New York Gold Exchange, and was for several years its president. As trustee and president of Colgate (formerly Madison) University, he for thirty years made almost annual donations to that institution, the development of which is due chiefly to his constant care and valuable advice.
